Research Theme

"Comparative Research on Effective Child-Raising Support Measures to Deal with Declining Birthrates in Japan and Korea"
Japan and Korea are rare among OECD countries in that a so-called "M-shaped curve" is still observed in their female labor force participation, while their total fertility rates remain low. This research will first ① examine the basic attitude, significance, concrete efforts and resources related to declining birthrate countermeasures at the national level, ② focus on the differences in fertility rates by region and socioeconomic stratum, and explore and analyze such differences and effectiveness of child-raising support measures. The research will also analyze and discuss factors related to existence in each country and region of an environment where a woman can give birth to and raise as many children as she wishes, as well as effectiveness of related measures.
