KFAW became a committee member of the 6.11 symposium on "Disaster / Restoration and Gender Equality"

A committee of the 6.11 symposium on "Disaster / Restoration and Gender Equality" started up their activities planned by the Japan's Network for Women and Health and the National Council of Women's Centers. The aims of this symposium are to make proposals and request central and local governments to create reforms from a gender perspective for elderly women's care; welfare services for the physically challenged; and countermeasures against privacy concerns for evacuees and sexual violence against women. As of May 2, 48 NGOs and 29 people have announced their participation in the symposium.
Accordingly, KFAW supported the symposium's purpose and accepted the offer to be one of the committee members. We would like to contribute to expanding these activities by working together with relevant organizations and NGOs.
We appreciate your kind understanding and cooperation for this symposium.

The 21st Kitakyushu Conference on Asian Women

********** [Finished] **********

1. Date              November 13, 2010 (Sat.)-November 14, 2010 (Sun.)

2. Venue           Kitakyushu Municipal Gender Equality Center MOVE

3. Organizer: Kitakyushu Forum on Asian Women (KFAW)

4. Theme
"Child Rearing Environments in the World: Children, Parents and Society"

Currently, Japan is taking a variety of measures to provide child-rearing assistance amid a declining birthrate. The City of Kitakyushu is also striving to "create a community that is the top supporter of child rearing in Japan."
The term "child rearing" does not refer simply to a task performed only by mothers or women. Nor is it only a family issue. Moreover, each family with children has its own set of circumstances and composition.
However, the healthy growth of children is wanted by all. Given this, what kind of systems, society, and environments would be more advantageous to child rearing?
On the Panel Discussion at the first day of the conference, we will look at "Child Rearing Environments in the World" and compare child-rearing circumstances in Japan and various countries, such as the United States, Korea, and Denmark, in an effort to search for what we can do to help to raise our children in future generations.
On the second day, KFAW researchers will report their research outcomes.

 *Simultaneous interpretation (Japanese-English) is available.

Women Today - Reviewing the 20-Year History of Women in Asian Breeze (May14.2010)

AB cover E.jpg

Women Today : Reviewing the 20-Year History of Women in Asian Breeze contains a series of essays titled "Women Today" carried at the beginning of the periodic journal Asian Breeze, published by the Kitakyushu Forum on Asian Women (KFAW).

The booklet contains all the essays from the first issue published in March 1991 to the latest, the 58th issue released in March 2010.

The authors of "Women Today" comprise opinion leaders and specialists in gender-related studies. From global perspectives, 54 eminent individuals in and outside Japan have contributed these essays. They inspire readers to review and reconsider important issues in our daily lives. The booklet editors do not alter individual's title or positions, as mentioned in the original essays.

The year 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Asian Breeze, which was first issued in 1991. Reviewing the history of Asian Breeze, we can also reflect upon the path of the Kitakyushu Forum on Asian Women (KFAW) and our activities.

On the 20th anniversary of Asian Breeze, KFAW has renewed its resolve to provide readers with even more inspiring articles from global perspectives through our efforts to strengthen our partnerships with the City of Kitakyushu, the United Nations and other related organizations in and outside Japan.
